It is days like today that I love my job! As the Business Librarian at Calgary Public Library I get to work on amazing projects with inspiring people. I am currently working with Stephanie Jackman, founder of the REAP Business Association.
The REAP Business Association was founded in Calgary in 2006 with the vision to create a vibrant living economy where citizens understand and value the impact of shopping locally. REAP members are Calgary businesses with visionary leaders who are concerned with helping to create a more sustainable city.
What’s So Great About REAP?
REAP is an excellent reference source for Calgarians looking to contribute to a vibrant local community with their spending power. According to their website:
“Members make ethical business decisions – buying green power, paying their employees a living wage, supporting local suppliers and giving back to their community – because they believe in the importance of corporate social responsibility. By supporting these companies, citizens enhance their quality of life and actively express their highest values.”
As a consumer the newly launched REAP website is a fabulous tool for easily identifying socially responsible local businesses.
REAP Down to Earth Week
Over the past couple of months the library has been working with REAP to organize REAP Down to Earth Week. REAP Down to Earth Week is an annual celebration of sustainable living. From March 28th to April 1st 2011 the REAP Business Association will be running a series of events that showcase the best in local living, including eating, investing, shopping, and playing. Through this program Calgarians can learn how their daily choices can create a more vibrant and resilient city.
- a lunch-time lecture series featuring Michael Shuman, Research & Economic Development Director at BALLE (Business Alliance for Local Living Economies),
- a green market that will give people the opportunity to meet some of the locally-owned, sustainably operated businesses in Calgary. Displays will be set up on the main floor of the library, providing a unique opportunity to shop and interact with independent merchants.
- Local feature menus at prominent Calgary restaurants including: The Boxwood, River Cafe and Gratitude Cafe Inc. Dine at these local restaurants during Down To Earth Week and sample the best in locally sourced food, derived from sustainable practices.
All of these events are happening throughout the City of Calgary, including at the Central Branch of the Calgary Public Library. Mark it in your calendars!
