Tutorial Tuesday: Pom Pom Wreath

by Kristen on December 21, 2010

Yesterday I posted a couple of pictures of the pom pom wreath I made this weekend and today I am sharing how I actually made the wreath.  The great thing about this wreath was that I had all the supplies lying around the house.

Supplies:

To make this wreath you will need:

  1. Coat Hanger
  2. String of Mini Lights
  3. Yarn
  4. Other decorations and embellishments (I used I glass bird and felt bows I made earlier this month)

Step One

Make a lot of pom poms!  I needed about 60 pompoms, but the amount you need will depend on the diameter of the hoop you create.  This is how I quickly made my pom poms without using a machine.

Start by winding yarn around your four fingers.

Keep the yarn wound up, remove it from your hand and tie a knot around the middle. Don’t trim the ends. You’ll use them to tie the bow around the wreath in one of the next steps.

With a pair of scissors cut through the yarn loops.

When you snip the loops your pom pom will look something like this.

Fluff your pom pom up to get it ready for the wreath.

Step Two

Take your wire coat hanger and twist it into a circle.  I used one coat hanger and I found that my wreath was just a touch on the floppy side. For a little extra stiffness, you could use two coat hangers loops and bind them together with some tape. Wrap the string of lights around the wire hanger and start tying on your pompoms around the hoop.

Keep adding pom poms until the wreath is full.  Add any other decorations you might like and enjoy!
