This week I hit the 23-week mark and Eric and I have started planning the baby’s room. We have started shopping and are patiently waiting for our mail-order nursery to arrive in Calgary.
Before going for the 18 week ultrasound, we decided not to find out the baby’s sex. Eric was adamant about wanting a surprise. I’m so excited to hear the classic “It’s a…” line. In the meantime, I have been wasting a ton of time Googling old wives tales about gender.
Not finding out the sex of the baby has had a huge impact on our decor choices for the room. As a result, we have tried to select furniture and accents that are gender neutral and will work for a baby boy or a girl. I also wanted to create a space that the kid could live with as it gets older without feeling like they were sleeping in a room decorated for a baby.
The first thing we picked out was wallpaper. The wallpaper is from Hygge & West and is Lisa Cogdon’s black and white triangles pattern. I chose this particular wallpaper pattern because it is gender neutral, grown up and a little sophisticated.
The slanted wall pictured below will act as the accent wall and is the first thing you see when you peek at into the space from the hallway. Pay no attention to the dresser. Eventually it will be painted and changed up to fit with the vibe in this room.
If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed that we also purchased a carpet for the baby’s room. It is a crazy bright coloured rug made of recycled cotton. Here is a photo of the sample from the showroom. The rug is currently on order and should be here sometime in the next month. The rug we ordered is 5 feet by 8 feet and covers most of the floor space in the baby’s room. I am so excited to bring it home and roll it out.
With these two purchases, we have spent $390 on the baby’s room to date. The carpet was $240 and the wallpaper for the accent wall, was $150. While these two purchases were a bit of a splurge, the crib is a hand-me-down, the dresser is an old piece of IKEA furniture that’s been kicking around our place for a few years and we received a glider as a Christmas gift. The glider is by Gus Modern and is also on order.
Here is a peek at our glider. It is so pretty and I am very excited for it to arrive. We are grateful to my aunt for this generous Christmas/ baby gift!
While there is still a ton of work to do in this room, at least we have a plan. I can’t wait for these purchases to arrive and to share the progress we make!
